For years, those who should have intervened pretended not to see, downplayed the issue, made promises, and then looked the other way while people got sick and died. Now, Europe has clearly affirmed what science has been denouncing for years: this is a silent massacre, and the State bears serious responsibility.
This is no longer the time for excuses, postponements, political maneuvering, empty promises, and slogans. Health is not a luxury—it is a constitutional right, and those in institutions have a duty to protect it with actions, not just words. Serious cleanups, real checks, and severe penalties for those who have poisoned our land and our lives are imperative.
Antonio Giordano, oncologist, pathologist at Temple University, and President of the Sbarro Institute, first exposed the Land of Fires crisis in his investigative book, “Monnezza di Stato: le terre dei fuochi nell'Italia dei veleni” (State Rubbish: The Lands of Fires in the Italy of Poisons). In it, he detailed the findings of the scientific project “Veritas,” which highlighted alarmingly high concentrations of toxic metals—including cadmium, mercury, arsenic, and lead—in the blood of cancer patients living in Giugliano, a municipality emblematic of North Naples' environmental devastation.
“If we don’t act firmly today, tomorrow will bring another sentence, and then another.
But every day of delay is measured in human lives,” warns Giordano. “Today, the State has a great opportunity for redemption—to stand by its citizens and cease being an accomplice to the greatest environmental and health disaster in our history. There is no more time. There is no more tolerance for inaction.
