On March 14, the Scuola Superiore Meridionale of Naples hosted a meeting of extraordinary importance, coordinated by the Sbarro Health Research Organization (SHRO). The event featured the National Anti-Mafia and Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor, Dr. Giovanni Melillo, who delivered a lectio magistralis on “Constitutional Duties.” Also present was the Mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, who opened the proceedings by welcoming Prosecutor Melillo and the distinguished speakers.

The Scuola Superiore Meridionale (SSM), recognized as the first in Southern Italy for excellence in education, played a key role in organizing the event. Among the attendees were Professor Giuseppe Recinto, Chief of Staff of the Minister of Education and Merit, and Professor Antonio Giordano, Professor of Pathological Anatomy at the University of Siena, both members of the SSM Organizing Committee. Also in attendance were Professor Matteo Lorito, Rector of the Federico II University of Naples, and Professor Arturo De Vivo, Head of the Organizing Committee of the Scuola Superiore Meridionale. Supporting the event were additional members of the SSM Organizing Committee, including Professor Giovanni Francesco Nicoletti, Rector of the University of Campania L. Vanvitelli, and Professor Pierdomenico Perata of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna of Pisa.

The audience included numerous listeners, among them coordinators of SSM doctorates such as Professors Nicola Fusco, Salvatore Capozziello, and Margherita Interlandi. Also present were Professor Carla Masi, Director of the Department of Law, Professor Andrea Mazzucchi, Director of the Department of Humanistic Studies, and Professor Stefano Consiglio, President of the School of Human and Social Sciences, alongside doctoral students and representatives of the City of Naples. All attendees emphasized the central role of education in fostering a conscious and responsible society.

As highlighted by Professor Giuseppe Recinto, “In his lectio magistralis on 'Constitutional Duties,' Attorney Giovanni Melillo underscored the importance of duties in building democratic life. He identified duties as the logical and legal foundation of respect for others and solidarity. Strengthening duties also means strengthening rights, particularly in a time as complex as the present, where even freedom and peace appear fragile.

A key contributor to the event was the Sbarro Health Research Organization, led by Professor Antonio Giordano, reaffirming its commitment to promoting scientific culture not only as a tool for technological progress but as a fundamental pillar in building a more just and equitable society. The meeting was part of a broader effort to raise awareness of the value of Research as a driver of social change, emphasizing the connection between science, public health, and the fight against mafias.

“Research and science support the most vulnerable groups, who are often the ones most affected by mafia influence,” said Dr. Antonio Giordano, Director of SHRO. “Providing scientific information helps citizens understand the value of the common good. Meetings like this serve that purpose. I am truly enthusiastic about yesterday’s event and the presence of National Anti-Mafia Prosecutor Dr. Giovanni Melillo, the highest Italian authority in the fight against mafia criminal organizations.”

The Scuola Superiore Meridionale of Naples, a prestigious center for higher education, reaffirms its status as a leading institution for the promotion of culture and legality, not only in the Campania region but throughout Italy. Professor Arturo De Vivo, Head of the School’s Organizing Committee, expressed his satisfaction with the event’s success, emphasizing the core message of Prosecutor Melillo’s address: “Starting from the foundations of Platonic thought, the Prosecutor discussed, with a broad vision, the significance of duties in a democratic state that seeks to uphold its citizens’ rights.”

The Sbarro Health Research Organization continues to champion the value of Research as a tool for collective progress, fostering dialogue between institutions, academia, and civil society.
